CRED-X Instructor Course

The Coral Reef Ecology Diver Extension (CRED-X) Instructor Course is an advanced professional training program designed to prepare experienced divers and conservation practitioners to teach coral reef ecology through both scientific knowledge and practical underwater experience.

Building upon the CRED-X pathway and Coral Reef Ecology Specialty, the course develops a deeper understanding of reef ecosystem functions, ecological interactions, field observation, and interpretation. Participants learn not only to recognize reef organisms, but to understand how they function, interact, and influence the health and resilience of the coral reef ecosystem.

 

Through intensive theory, practical in-water application, and instructor-level training, candidates develop the knowledge, field competency, and teaching skills required to conduct CRED-X training and guide divers toward becoming more informed and responsible observers of coral reef ecosystems.

Coral Reef Ecology Diver Extension — Instructor Development Program

The CRED-X Instructor Course prepares qualified divers, educators, and conservation practitioners to teach coral reef ecology through structured academic instruction and practical underwater ecological observation. The program develops instructors who can move students beyond simply identifying reef organisms toward understanding ecological functions, interactions, indicators, and ecosystem processes.

The central philosophy of CRED-X instruction is simple:

We do not teach divers only what they see. We teach them to understand what the reef is communicating.

Course Fees

The course fee for the CRED-X Instructor Course is MYR 6000 (US$ 1500)

The fee includes:

  • Course Registration

  • Instructor Trainer's Professional Fee

  • Study materials

  • 20 hours of lectures

  • 8 Training Dives

  • Instructor Teaching Kit

  • Certification (Upon Successful Completion)

Training Duration

​Considering the lengthy training of this course, the training duration for this course is divided in two parts:

  • Study Duration - 20 lecture session ( 1 hour per  session ) - Online

  • Field Training - 5 days of field training (Maximum of 2 dives per day plus teaching and practice)

Prerequisites

Candidates entering the CRED-X Instructor Course should meet the following minimum requirements:

Diving Qualification

Candidates should:

  • Hold a recognized recreational diving certification.

  • Possess sufficient diving experience to safely supervise ecological observation activities.

  • Demonstrate competent buoyancy and underwater control.

  • Be medically fit for diving according to applicable diving standards and local regulations.

 

Where the candidate will independently supervise students underwater, an appropriate professional-level diving qualification may be required according to the standards of the relevant training organization and jurisdiction.

Ecological Training

Candidates should have successfully completed:

Coral Reef Ecology Diver Extension (CRED-X)

and/or the appropriate advanced Coral Reef Ecology Specialty training required within the instructor pathway.

Equivalent ecological education or professional experience may be considered subject to assessment.

Training Structure

The CRED-X Instructor Course combines ecological theory, teaching development, field application, and candidate assessment.

Phase 1 — Ecological Theory

Candidates review the ecological foundations required to teach the CRED-X program.

Major areas include:

  1. Coral reef ecosystem concepts

  2. Functional ecology

  3. Ecological interactions

  4. Ecological indicators

  5. Reef zonation

  6. Ecological succession

  7. Ecosystem resilience

Special emphasis is placed on understanding the seven major ecological components used within the CRED-X framework:

Marine Fishes → Corals → Sponges → Marine Plants → Invertebrates → Microbes → Seawater

Candidates learn to interpret these components as interconnected ecological drivers rather than isolated subjects.

Phase 2 — Instructor Development

Candidates learn how to transform ecological knowledge into effective diver education.

Training includes:

  • Lesson preparation

  • Presentation techniques

  • Ecological briefing methods

  • Use of photographs, diagrams, and field examples

  • Student questioning techniques

  • Teaching functional ecology

  • Developing observation objectives

  • Conducting ecological dive briefings

  • Post-dive interpretation and discussion

The objective is to develop instructors who facilitate ecological thinking, rather than simply delivering information.

Phase 3 — Field Training

Instructor candidates participate in practical ecological dives.

Training activities may include:

  • Reef orientation

  • Habitat observation

  • Functional feeding-group observation

  • Fish census exercises

  • Coral condition observations

  • Algal community observations

  • Invertebrate observations

  • Ecological indicator identification

  • Reef zonation exercises

  • Ecological interaction observations

  • Disturbance and recovery interpretation

Each dive should have clearly defined ecological learning objectives.

Phase 4 — Teaching Practicum

Candidates conduct supervised teaching activities.

Each candidate should demonstrate the ability to:

Plan → Brief → Teach → Conduct → Observe → Debrief → Evaluate

The practicum should include both theoretical and practical teaching components.

Candidates may be required to conduct:

  • A classroom presentation

  • An ecological dive briefing

  • A supervised field session

  • A post-dive ecological discussion

Instructor Trainers evaluate both scientific accuracy and teaching effectiveness.

Phase 5 — Assessment

Candidate performance is assessed through a combination of:

  • Knowledge Assessment

  • Evaluation of ecological concepts, functional ecology, ecosystem processes, and CRED-X instructional principles.

  • Teaching Assessment

  • Evaluation of presentation ability, accuracy, communication, lesson organization, and student engagement.

  • Field Assessment

  • Evaluation of diving competency, environmental awareness, ecological observation, student supervision, and field interpretation.

  • Professional Assessment

  • Evaluation of conduct, conservation ethics, safety awareness, responsibility, and adherence to CRED-X training standards.

Certification Requirements

To qualify for certification as a CRED-X Instructor, the candidate must successfully complete all required components of the Instructor Course.

Certification requires satisfactory completion of:

✓ Practical ecological observation exercises
✓ Classroom teaching assessment
✓ Ecological dive briefing assessment
✓ Supervised in-water teaching assessment

Candidates must also demonstrate acceptable standards of:

  • Diving safety

  • Environmental responsibility

  • Ecological knowledge

  • Scientific accuracy

  • Teaching competency

  • Field leadership

  • Professional conduct

 

Completion of training activities alone does not automatically guarantee certification. Instructor status is awarded upon demonstrated competency.
