ORR Anti-Green Washing Policy

At Ocean Reef Restoration (ORR), environmental responsibility is not a marketing strategy — it is a measurable commitment to real-world action, accountability, and ecological integrity. The ORR Anti-Green Washing Policy was established to protect the credibility of genuine marine conservation efforts and to ensure that all affiliated organizations uphold the highest standards of transparency and environmental ethics.

Green washing occurs when environmental claims are exaggerated, misleading, unsupported, or used primarily for promotional advantage without meaningful action behind them. In today’s environmental landscape, conservation language is frequently used to attract public trust, customers, and recognition, while actual practices often fail to reflect the claims being made. ORR rejects this practice entirely.

The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all ORR Affiliate Centers, partners, instructors, and representatives communicate environmental initiatives honestly, responsibly, and with verifiable evidence. Affiliation with ORR is not intended to serve as a symbolic environmental label or commercial marketing tool. It is recognition of demonstrated environmental accountability and authentic conservation participation.

Core Principles of the Policy

1. Evidence-Based Environmental Claims

All conservation, sustainability, rehabilitation, or environmental protection claims made by affiliated centers must be supported by genuine actions, documented activities, or measurable outcomes. Statements that exaggerate environmental impact, overstate achievements, or create false impressions of conservation involvement are strictly prohibited.

Affiliates must be able to demonstrate:

• Actual conservation participation

• Tangible environmental initiatives

• Responsible operational practices

• Verifiable educational or ecological programs

• Consistent environmental conduct over time

2. Transparency & Honesty

Affiliated organizations must maintain complete honesty in all public communications, including:

• Advertising materials

• Websites and social media

• Educational content

• Conservation campaigns

• Public statements and promotions

Environmental messaging must accurately reflect the scale, scope, and impact of actual activities. Affiliates may not imply partnerships, achievements, certifications, or ecological outcomes that cannot be substantiated.

3. No Symbolic Conservation

ORR does not recognize superficial environmental gestures that exist solely for branding or public image enhancement. Conservation initiatives must provide meaningful educational, ecological, or community value rather than functioning as symbolic promotional activities.

Examples of unacceptable practices include:

• Using conservation language without measurable action

• Organizing staged environmental activities solely for publicity

• Misrepresenting minimal actions as major conservation achievements

• Promoting reef-safe or sustainable operations without implementing operational standards

• Displaying environmental branding while conducting irresponsible dive practices

4. Accountability for Environmental Conduct

Affiliated centers are expected to uphold environmental responsibility in daily operations, not only during organized conservation events. This includes:

• Responsible diver management

• Reef-safe diving practices

• Proper waste management

• Protection of marine wildlife

• Environmentally responsible boat and facility operations

• Ethical underwater conduct by staff and instructors

ORR affiliation may be reviewed, suspended, or revoked if affiliated organizations are found to be acting contrary to the environmental values they publicly promote.

5. Educational Integrity

Environmental education provided under ORR affiliation must be factual, responsible, and scientifically grounded. Affiliates must avoid spreading misinformation, unsupported claims, or misleading conservation narratives designed to create false impressions of environmental expertise or impact.

Education should prioritize:

• Ecological understanding

• Responsible diver behavior

• Conservation awareness

• Reef protection ethics

• Long-term sustainability principles

6. Long-Term Commitment Over Publicity

ORR recognizes environmental leadership through sustained commitment rather than isolated campaigns or short-term publicity efforts. Genuine conservation is measured through consistency, responsibility, and ongoing improvement.

Affiliates are encouraged to:

• Continuously improve environmental practices

• Participate in long-term conservation initiatives

• Foster environmental awareness within their communities

• Integrate conservation into operational culture

• Lead by example within the diving industry

7. Protection of ORR Credibility

The ORR name, logo, affiliation status, and environmental identity may not be used in ways that misrepresent the relationship between ORR and affiliated organizations. ORR reserves the right to investigate misleading environmental claims and to take corrective action when necessary.

Any misuse of ORR affiliation for deceptive marketing, unsupported conservation claims, or reputational exploitation constitutes a violation of this policy.

Our Position

ORR believes that the future of marine conservation depends on credibility, honesty, and meaningful action. Environmental leadership is not defined by slogans, logos, or marketing campaigns — it is defined by responsibility, transparency, and measurable commitment to protecting marine ecosystems.

For this reason, ORR Affiliate Centers are expected to represent a higher standard within the diving industry: organizations that do not simply speak about conservation, but actively live it through their operations, education, and conduct.
