Coral Propagation Workshop
The ORRC Coral Propagation Workshop is a blended learning programme designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and ecological responsibility required to propagate corals safely and ethically.
The workshop is delivered in two progressive parts. Part One consists of guided self-study materials and educational videos, through which participants learn the fundamentals of coral biology, propagation objectives, tools and equipment, responsible broodstock selection, natural substrates, coral handling and propagation procedures. This knowledge prepares participants to understand not only how each task is performed, but also why every decision can affect coral health and survival.
Part Two consists of supervised field exercises in which participants apply their knowledge under real environmental conditions. Training includes site observation, equipment preparation, responsible selection and handling of coral fragments, substrate preparation, fragmentation and attachment techniques, nursery placement, documentation and post-propagation monitoring.
The workshop emphasizes that coral propagation is more than attaching fragments to substrates. It is a controlled biological process that must be guided by ecological understanding, minimum intervention, careful handling and respect for natural reef processes. ORRC methods prioritize naturally detached coral fragments, biologically suitable natural substrates and procedures that minimize stress and environmental disturbance.
Completion is based on both knowledge development and demonstrated field competency. Participants who successfully complete the full workshop will be prepared to support supervised coral propagation, nursery and reef-rehabilitation activities in accordance with ORRC standards and ethical conservation principles.
Learn the biology. Develop the skill. Propagate with responsibility.
